The present issue of the ASPA Journal, dedicated to the Women and Theatre, focuses on the women activity in the theatre from the second half of the eighteenth century to the first half of the twentieth century to rediscover and enhance the history of women in the field of theatre studies. Businesswomen, directors, playwrights, company directors, administrators, actresses, singers and dancers played a significant role in the process of creating and producing the theatre enterprise. Over the centuries, the artistic and technical-practical contribution of women in the creation and realisation of theatre productions has often been marginalised and women’s careers hindered, with the exception of a few personalities who have excelled. As far as gender studies in the field of theatre studies are concerned, there has been an interest in redeeming above all the role of some emerging female figures.

The authors of this Journal issue highlight the social, political and cultural dynamics that in every age women faced to establish themselves on the theatrical stage. Thanks to the research carried out and the documentation collected, we try to overcome the split existing between the commonly known History of Theatre and the History of  a “Gender Theatre”.

The contribution focuses on the outcome of certain female careers during the last phase of the life of the Comédie-Italienne in Paris, between the 1860s and 1770s, when the permeability between the comic and musical components of the Italiens’ repertoire generated a hybrid, exclusively female role in the Troupe’s programming and structure, leading to the engagement of a professional singer, Anna Maria Piccinelli. The ‘real’ and the ‘fictional’ “cantatrice” present in the subjects represented by the Troupe are the two guidelines followed in this study, since in the context of the Comédie-Italienne these aspects influenced each other; the relationship between the company structure, actor, role and character was one of extreme overlap.

Celeste Coltellini (1760-1828) was a beloved singer of the Neapolitan scenes between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. She was the daughter of Marco Coltellini, a publisher, poet and librettist from Livorno. When she was very young, she moved to Naples with her three sisters and there she began an amazing career in the musical comedy theater. Citing a recent biography and monograph by Carola Bebermeir, we highlight the function of cultural mediator that Celeste played in the Neapolitan salons and then at the Viennese court of Joseph II, where she met Casti, Salieri, Da Ponte and very probably Mozart too. Talented actress, singer and painter, she is a prominent figure in many chronicles, diaries, period accounts and even in a recent novel by Elio Capriati.

From the 17th century, the role of the Soprano began to take importance. The operatic staging involves, in the realization of the product imagined for the Soprano, a demanding work of filing and creating the character directly on the interpreter. And so, great 19th century sopranos such as Isabella Colbran (Andrea della Corte, 1951 and Carla di Carlo, 2013), Giuditta Pasta (Susan Rutherford, 2007 and Paolo Russo, 2002) and Maria Malibran (Fabio Bertani, 2015) become the silhouettes on which the melodramatic production tailors draw the characters. This article wants to present these female artists by capturing both the characteristic features of the performative and artistic sphere but also the more human and personal features, providing overall some key interpretative elements of female opera stardom. To get to know the sopranos, reference will be made to chronicles of the time, their diaries and letters from different stakeholders (librettists, composers, family members, lovers…). In the conclusion, a new interpretative key will be provided from the point of view of the concept of stardom, reinterpreted in a pre-Hollywood key.

Antonia Pallerini’s name is closely linked to that of Salvatore Viganò, of whose choreodramas she became a privileged interpreter from 1810 until the choreographer death. She was the leading character in Prometeo (1813), Mirra (1817) and Otello (1818), among many others works by Viganò. Especially appreciated are her great miming and interpretative skills, which are essential for Viganovian ballets. However, the career of this dancer has not been specifically investigated but she always appeared “on the sidelines” of studies on choreodrama. By a careful reading of sources such as librettos, theoretical texts, commentaries, and reviews that appeared in the periodicals of the time, this paper intends to make a very first survey of her early career and to investigate her role within Salvatore Viganò’s creative process.

The contribution deals with the case of Fanny Sadowski (1826-1906), a much-loved actress and actress manager during the middle years of the 19th century. Through the comparison with well-known periodicals of the time, memoirs and various kinds of documentary sources, an attempt is made to reconstruct the trend of her first successful decade, from 1843 to 1853, with the aim of tracing Sadowski’s artistic identity: her training experience, her professional choices, the development of her own image as an actress. Starting with the identification of these dynamics, we reflect in conclusion on the possible reasons that led Sadowski to settle, from 1855, in Naples theaters, such as the need to delimit her reach and power within safe and precise boundaries.

The aim of the research is to trace the landing stages to the figure of the female comedian of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century through the experience and artistic career of Pia Marchi Maggi (1847-1900), culminated in the constitution of Pia Marchi Maggi’s Company in 1895. The methodology used refers to the material history of italian theater, based on direct and indirect sources, and to an updated bibliographical recognition. Only from a deep knowledge of the reference context and document collections, in which to search, it’s possible to attempt a most probable reconstruction of the historical events. The results obtained demonstrate the central role of this actress in the history of the female comic specialization in the Italian prose theater – not dialectal – at the turn of the century.

The contribution focuses on the never-before-studied figure of Giuseppina Rabozzi (1850- 1901), wife of puppeteer Pio Rame (1849-1921), then grandmother of Franca Rame (1929-2013). Rabozzi was the first administrator of the company, inaugurating the solid tradition of women impresarios that distinguished the Rame family. The aim of this contribution is to highlight the importance of Rabozzi’s role within the company. The chosen methodology is historical. Archive sources found in the Rame Fo Archive, currently located in the State Archives in Verona, and in other private archive funds are examined. Unpublished information and documents concerning an emblematic company of the Italian theatrical tradition of the second half of the 20th century are brought to light.

A soprano and an impresario of international renown, Emma Carelli (1877-1928) is a notorious and mystified case of woman of power. She was an outstanding figure both as an artist and a businesswoman with a fascinating and rich biography. Therefore, it is no surprise that her life has fostered in the last century myths and sometimes-unreliable reconstructions. Drawing upon uncharted documents preserved at the Historical Diplomatic Archive of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and at the Central State Archive of Rome, the paper adjusts Carelli in a more reliable perspective, as a key but problematic figure in the development of the international theatrical commerce, and as one of the most important female impresarios in Italian theatre history.

Between 1915 and 1924, the most famous Parisian chanteuse Yvette Guilbert devoted a large part of her strength to the theatrical education of girls. In New York she found a fertile ground to open her school but after only two years she was forced to close it and come back to Paris. Nevertheless the hopes of establishing in Europe her home-school-theater definitively extinguished.

By various sources, primary archival and autobiographical, the contribution reconstructs the little-known, although important pedagogical mission of Guilbert. In particular, the article contextualizes the educational models and local influences that inform her school and tries to piece together the networks of women and philanthropists she could have come in touch with, to explaining the reasons for its “failure”.
